Background
Since autumn 2014 the standardized screening ?LogiK-S? (Logopädie im Kindergarten ? Screening) is carried out in Upper Austria in the penultimate kindergarten year (4- to 5-year-olds) to identify problems in language acquisition. LogiK-S allows an assessment of hearing, receptive and expressive grammar, pronunciation and phonology in monolingual and bilingual children who grow up with German as their first or second language.
Methods
The original LogiK-S does not include any tests for phonological working memory so far, but because in recent years instruments for testing phonological working memory (non-word and sentence repetition tasks) were described as a promising predictor for language development in testing multilingual children, we added a non-word and a sentence repetition task to the present screening. In the described project phase, within the period of 3 months (beginning of January to beginning of April 2017), the phonological working memory for non-words and sentences of N=171 children with German as a second language was carried out in 7 kindergartens in the city of Linz beside the LogiK-Screening. The goal was to assess if the non-word and sentence repetition task are able to improve or replace the current screening.
Results
Results show that the outcomes of non-word repetition don´t show any improvement, whilst the outcomes of the sentence repetition task at least show the same findings as the items of LogiK-S.
Conclusion
Although the results indicate that the previous total score of LogiK-S shows the best prediction of identifying language delay, adaptations are possible, which bring a comparable predictive power and possibly an advantage (e.g., applicability) for practitioners.
