Raman spectroscopy is a standard technique for studying the dynamic lattice prop-erties of solids, including surfaces and interfaces. Despite the success of Ramanspectroscopy in the study of surface phonons, most published work to date has focusedon surfaces and interfaces of semiconductor materials. The goal of this project is toapply resonant Raman spectroscopy to the study of vibrational properties of metalsurfaces. A first Raman scattering experiment suggests the existence of Raman activeoptical phonons on Cu(110), with a surprisingly large scattering efficiency. Theresearch as part of the Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship will provide the first systematicinvestigation of Raman scattering of surface phonons on a metal surface.
