Modelling an electrical machine is not always necessary to build a 3D-FE-model. The database size and the CPU time can be unacceptable using the real 3D-model. For the design of a low cost motor an efficient 2D-FE-model has been developed for first designs. Structure and specification are based on the Finite Element Method presented in this paper. The 3D-FEM has been taken to calculate the magnetic field and the static torque has been computed by Maxwell Stress Tensor Method. The accuracy of the 2D-model is checked by comparison with the results obtained by 3D-magnetic field analysis and measurement of a prototype machine. Possible applications of the designed motor are stepper motors, servo applications, conveyor drives and direct drives.
