Advanced PIV-measurements with a full scale water model and numerical calculations with the CFD code Fluent have been carried out to predict the flow and temperature behaviour of gas loaded steel flow in the mould of a slab caster with emphasis on the regions near the mold level. A stable flow with moderate fluctuations is desired in order to reduce the mold slag entrapment, and the temperature should not be to low in order to avoid the formation of solidified bridges on the mold level. The gas loaded flow turned out to be a challenge for both PIV-measurements and CFD-simulations but also for the flow optimisation: high gas rates cause an inherent unsteady flow on the mold top surface. The results of the experimental and numerical investigations have also been compared with flow measurements on the plant. An unturned and a turned two-port submerged entry nozzle have been considered with focus on the robustness against casting parameter variations.
