Original Kurzfassung:
Traditional Environmental Control (EC) devices are based on proprietary and special developed hardware components. This results in quite expensive components that cannot use the flexibility, adaptability and power of modern Human Computer Interfaces (HCI) and according Assistive Technology (AT). This paper discusses the Smart Environment Control System , a concept of an EC System which is based on off-the-shelf components which are handled via standard HCI components and become therefore easily extendible, mobile, multifunctional, flexible and adaptable. The first release of SmartX was a feasibility study developed in the Microsoft .Net framework on a PDA as hardware platform. The functionalities and the interface of traditional EC have been ported to a standard HCI. To push the development of SmartX it becomes now open source with the aim to establish a developer community. The development starts from the scratch with a more flexible and open architecture. This paper demonstrates the current development stage, discusses future steps and invites to contribute.
