The influence of Hg nominal concentration and of sample geometry during sintering on the phase purity, microstructure and superconducting properties of ceramic HgxBa2Ca2Cu3Oy was investigated. Samples could be prepared consisting of only one Hg-phase and very few nonsuperconducting secondary phases and with critical current densities in the grains up to 3.587106 A/cm2 (0 T, 4.2 K). Aging for 5 months in dry air leads to a strong degradation of the grain boundaries. The flux creep behaviour is mainly determined by bulk pinning effects.
