Several years past since first papers regarding wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been
published. Nowadays WSNs are an established concept in applications like home automation.
Following the trend of making the world wireless the time has come to use WSNs in
industrial mechatronic applications. These new applications impose tighter constraints
regarding energy consumption, real-time ability, and reliability compared to the
old ones. Typically closed loop systems are used which imply, that the timing
behaviour of the nodes in the network is known. As simulation is the only feasible
way to evaluate and verify the network before it is deployed, special focus must
be put on the accurate simulation of the timing.
In this paper we show a way to establish a time-accurate and still efficient
simulation of wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs). Our methodology combines
three established modelling principles to a single new one. In this work we
concentrate on the simulation of the software component. Complex algorithms
writen in C have to be processed by resource-limited nodes. In our concept we
combine the source code with binary-level runtime estimations. This time-annotated
source code is than compiled at the host and linked into the simulation.
To demonstrate the correctness and practicability of our approach, the methodology was applied
to algorithms daily used in digital signal processing, encryption and data sorting.
We verified our simulation results by means of measurements and results are presented
accordingly.
