This paper presents a simulation study about a high frequency piston pump actuated by an electrical drive, both forming a unit of high compactness called Compact Hybrid Pump. It consists of an oscillating pump which delivers fluid through a net of rectifying valves. In order to maximize the efficiency of the linear drive and the compactness of the pump working frequencies in the order of hundreds of Hertz are considered. Hydraulic systems experience different problems at such high frequencies: the authors of this paper consider the valves to be the most critical element for this system. The pump considered in this study works at a frequency of 500 Hz with a reference delivery of 2.2 l/min, a maximum pressure of 300 bar and a tank pressure of 10 bar. Simulations, carried on in Simulink, aim to investigate the dynamics of both active and check valves and its impact on pump performance. Results indicate cavitation in suction phase as the most consistent effect of a not sufficiently fast valve. While a parametric optimisation of check valves can reduce the occurrence of cavitation, the introduction of active valves provides additional means to control the critical processes. In particular simulations show that, considering the actual limits of electro-hydraulic valve technology, the use of 4 active valves could be a solution for this application.
