In this paper we propose a capacitive measurement setup which measures the sharpness of cutting blades for soft materials. The setup offers a resolution in the aF-range with accuracy in the fF-range. These properties are mainly due to the high resolution AD7746 capacitance-to-digital converter which is integrated in the setup. The setup measures the capacitance formed between a blade and a wire electrode with a diameter of 50 um. This sensing electrode is positioned with respect to the blade such that a high lateral resolution is achieved.
The aim of this work consists in verifying the theoretical model of the measurement setup which has been obtained by conformal mapping in previous work through measurements. If the model validation is successful, an improved version of the proposed measurement setup can be utilized to measure the geometric parameters defining the blade sharpness. Then the theoretical model provides the connection between the two dimensional capacitance measurements and the geometry of the three dimensional measurement object.
