Original Kurzfassung:
This chapter provides motivation for and an overview of the contents of the book at hand. Milestones in the history of semiconductor research are briefly touched upon to explain the necessity for post-CMOS technologies to combat effects like Dark Silicon. These need to be overcome to propel computation-intensive future-oriented technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and immersive virtual reality. A promising candidate for this endeavor is field-coupled nanocomputing (FCN), which describes a class of emerging integrated circuit technologies that include contestants with enhancements in terms of energy dissipation and feature size. Challenges in the physical design domain of FCN are succinctly summarized, which then leads over to an outline of the following chapters.
