Development of a hybrid pump control based on a digital hydraulic controller

Variable displacement pumps are indispensable for the realization of energy efficient, robust hydraulic systems. The swivel angle of these pumps can be controlled hydraulically  or by using electrically driven valves . Electric feedback provides flexibility in choosing different process variables. For this purpose, today proportional  or servo valves are used, where especially the latter are expensive, show permanent leakage and thus lower efficiency. To remedy these disadvantages for high end pumps a digital hydraulic approach was developed to reduce leakage and costs. In this paper the performance of a controller regarding comparable accuracy and control rate but enabling a highly increased flexibility and energy efficiency with digital hydraulics  is shown.
