This paper presents a novel electromagnetic measuring concept in order to determine the chemical composition of multi-phase materials in industrial applications by using a model-based estimator. Therefore, the required mathematical model, the so-called signal model, includes an effective medium approximation, an electromagnetic model and a model of the measurement system itself. The combination of these models allows the calculation of the coil?s complex impedance for different material compositions in the observation volume of the measuring system. However, due to the nonlinearity, an inversion of the model is not easily possible. Thus, in the course of this study, a model-based estimation procedure is introduced, which estimates the volumetric fraction of certain material phases based on measured complex impedances. The authors discuss and introduce all required models and explain necessary assumptions to derive the whole modeling chain. Finally, the concept as well as the entire modelling chain is verified through measuring sets with various samples made of idealized two-dimensional materials.
