Voice to Text recognition (speech recognition) has witnessed significant progress the last years. This paper will outline the results of the VOICE project that aims at raising the awareness on how speech recognition systems could be used as assistive devices for people with disabilities. A special focus will be given on the support of the communication of hard of hearing and deaf people. A prototype of a multi-media software tool providing subtitles for different communication situations will be presented. Results of user needs analyses will be discussed.
