Text to speech synthesis and voice to text recognition have witnessed significant progress the last years offering also new possibilities for people with disabilities. This paper gives an overview to the VOICE project, which aimed at raising the awareness for speech recognition capabilities for people with disabilities. The potential of these systems and usability problems will be discussed. The centre of gravity will be given to a prototype of a subtitling system developed for the communication with hard of hearing and deaf people.
