Original Kurzfassung:
OECD Technical Roundtable on the Measurement of Social Integration; The social integration of immigrants and their children is receiving increasing attention and constitutes a key part of integration programmes in many OECD countries. While there is broad agreement about its
importance, its actual meaning is difficult to gauge. What is more, social integration is difficult to measure
as social integration indicators often rely on subjective assessments, such as attitudes, feelings, and
perceptions.
Despite these challenges, several countries - including Austria, Germany, Belgium (Flanders), the Netherlands and Norway - collect information on social integration of immigrants through surveys. As standardised household surveys generally do not cover topics related to social integration, these countries have developed specific surveys, which are generally representative of the main immigrant groups in the country and also include a comparison sample of the native-born population.
To facilitate the exchange of good practices regarding the design and use of such surveys, the OECD and the Austrian Federal Chancellery organise an informal technical roundtable discussion with a number of member countries on the measurement of social integration. Participants are invited to share their experiences and to consider challenges and lessons learned, in particular with respect to the following:
(a) Sample sizes and target groups
(b) Main issues to be covered
(c) Use of data on social integration in policymaking
