This contribution presents the evolution from Non Destructive Testing (NDT) over Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) to Structural Health Control (SHC) applied on wind turbines. The trend of the industry in different sectors, e.g. aeronautics, infrastructure and mechanical structure, due to the use of composite material and optimization of structures, increased the need of systems to identify damages to fulfil safety standards and to avoid hull loss of these structures in service, respectively. Starting with offline systems to identify the damage, the well-known Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technology is used. However, the idea of using NDT methods online was the next stage to improve monitoring systems of structures, which are implemented in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems. However, SHM solely identifies the damage on structures online and do not assess the damage. Additionally, the last few decades different systems had been developed, e.g. Condition
Monitoring (CM) to monitor the usage parameter like wind speed, rotation speed, temperature etc. to obtain additional information about the state of the structural health to monitor these structures. Moreover, Damage Prognosis (DP) tools had been developed to estimate the residual life of the structure during service. Furthermore, monitoring systems came up on the market to propose repair solutions at the right time, which is known as Condition
Based Maintenance (CBM). The conjunction of all these required system, based on a feedback control system, is done by the SHC concept. This concept is a comprehensive concept for observation and assessment of damages, which can be used for all structures and for wind turbines, respectively. Furthermore, we point out the challenges
with SHC applied on wind turbines and critical questions of monitoring systems on lightweight structures will be addressed.
