The aim of this poster is to provide insight into the simulation of solid dispersions, consisting of polymer carriers and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
It has been already proven that solid dispersions are able to greatly enhance the bio-availability of APIs [1]. Herein, we have chosen to fabricate drug dosage forms
with enhanced solubility by injection moulding technique. The distribution homogeneity of the drug within the polymer matrix must be ensured by the end of the
injection moulding process. This is necessary to provide the same drug content and respective activity in each pharmaceutical dosage form. The open source CFD
software package OpenFOAM® (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) [2] is used to simulate the API distribution in the melt during processing in the plasticizing
unit. The solid dispersion here studied consists of BASF Soluplus® (polymer matrix) and fenofibrate (API).
