Self-Interference Cancellation in LTE / 5G FDD Carrier Aggregation Transceivers using Adaptive Filtering

The increase of data rates in LTE-A requires wider signal bandwidths. Therefore, the number of carrier aggregation combinations in future mobile communication standards has been extended by the third generation partnership (3GPP). As a consequence RF transceivers supporting these standards need to
implement several parallel receiver chains operating on different clock domains to support the CA combinations. However, from an RF perspective the different clock domains together with a shrinking
chip size may result in a coupling between the oscillators which leads to spur frequencies. An unwanted side effect is that these spurs might down-convert unwanted frequency content and degrade the
receiver performance. This means that even in FDD operation self-interference problems arise. One counteraction is to use adaptive filtering in order to cancel the transmitter induced self-interference. Additionally, also impairments of the analog RF components like IQ-imbalance or second-order intermodulation distortions due to coupling effects in the mixer have to be addressed. In this contribution we explain challenges in the RF transceiver design related to self-interference and present methods to enhance the receiver performance by adaptive filtering algorithms.
