Does the Blockchain-Technology promote collaborative innovation practices?

Whereas traditional views of organizational governance structures are based on centralization and hierarchy, blockchains promise a more decentralized coordination and new ways of governing groups of people and aligning interests. These aspects seem to allow but also require entirely new forms of collaborations in innovation projects. Therefore, this paper pursues the following research questions: How can blockchain technology contribute effectively to increasing the innovation potential of interorganizational collaboration? Which challenges exist in establishing such cooperation projects and what are effective mechanisms to manage them? (Multiple Case Study) Initial analysis shows that these interorganizational collaborations can be the basis for innovative approaches and new sources of relational rents. On the other hand, first findings show that these blockchain-collaborations require a completely new way of working together (e.g. no focal firm, higher level of transparency).
