Unique word orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) prevents intersymbol interference by introducing a unique word (UW), e.g., a sequence of zeros, at the tail of each symbol. Compared to cyclic prefix (CP) OFDM, UW-OFDM in general features a better bit error ratio (BER) while having a slightly lower bandwidth efficiency. In this work, the constraints on the UW are softened, with the dedicated goal to increase the bandwidth efficiency of the communication system. We propose a modification of the so-called non-systematically encoded UW-OFDM scheme that enables an increased bandwidth efficiency by around 5%. The effects of the proposed modifications on the BER as well as on several other performance measures are analyzed.
