Estimation of attenuation coefficient from B-mode ultrasound images

We report on the estimation of both the attenuation coefficient and the attenuation power law
exponent from simulated B-mode ultrasound images. It is well documented  that these parameters significantly
diverge between normal breast tissue and malignant lesions. It is therefore of great importance to devise
and test algorithms that facilitate accurate estimation of spatially resolved attenuation.
k-Wave is a Matlab toolbox  for the time-domain simulation of acoustic wave fields that facilitates
simulation of both linear and nonlinear wave propagation in homogeneous and heterogeneous tissue, as
compared to strictly linear ultrasound simulation tools (e.g. Field II). k-Wave can also be applied to simulate
arbitrary distributions (resolved down to single voxel sizes) of parameters including the speed of sound, mass
density, scattering strength and to include power law acoustic absorption necessary for simulation tasks in
medical diagnostic ultrasound. Via the spectral log difference technique, we obtain estimation results from
simulated and thus well-known absorption distributions and compare the results to reference value.
