: All industrial processes have to develop towards a higher productivity and/or a better quality of the final product. In continuous casting of steel, these demands are met ? amongst other strategies ? by employing electromagnetic actuators. Their usage is on a steady rise due to their possibility for a sophisticated, contactless flow control. While rotary electromagnetic stirring is quite established for blooms and billets, for slab casting mostly electromagnetic brakes were employed so far. Recently, the usage of linear electromagnetic stirrers at slab casters is increasing due to their beneficial impacts, especially on ferritic stainless and silicon steels.
The combination of the slab casting process with electromagnetic linear stirring requires a well-founded knowledge base, so that the stirrer can be used efficiently. Plant trials are not sufficient to build up this knowledge. Numerical modelling can provide detailed views of the liquid steel flow and is therefore crucial for understanding the interaction between the electromagnetic fields and the liquid steel. Only a deep insight into the coupling between the liquid steel flow and the electromagnetic forces makes it possible to improve/optimize the whole process.
The presented work is an on-going research to bridge the gap between the liquid steel flow and the grain structure of the end product. This paper focuses on the liquid steel flow modified by the employed traveling magnetic fields, as the liquid steel flow has a major impact on the quality of the final product. Relying mainly on numerical simulations, the impact of the stirring parameters and stirring modes is investigated, so as to find an optimal setup, which can then be tested at a real slab casting machine
