Relations among participation in school as well as in family and the development of children’s personality traits were examined using data from a longitudinal cohort study. Two national representative age cohorts were surveyed three times at intervals of one and a half year. Regarding to prior results we hypothesise, that participation has positive effects on the development of social open-mindedness and positive self-perception. Further we suggest participation to attenuate externalising problems, internalising problems and motoric agitation. Hypotheses were tested by means of bivariate latent growth models (LGM). In large part, the findings support our assumptions.
