Relations among attachment to school and externalising behaviour were examined using data from a longitudinal cohort study (Children's Panel of the German Youth Institute). Two national representative age cohorts were surveyed three times at intervals of one and a half year. The younger cohort (N=1148) started at the age of about 5 years. The cohort of the elder (N=1042) was interviewed the first time at the age of 8-9 years. The guiding hypotheses are that (1) a low attachment to school fosters externalising problems and (2) externalising problems lead to strained student-teacher or student-student relationships, which undermine children’s attachment to school and finally result in further behavioural problems.
Additionally structural (SES, migration background) and individual (Sex, school achievement) characteristics are assumed to moderate the time-lagged effects of externalising problems on school attachment. Using the younger cohort for exploration, the hypotheses were tested by means of structural equation modelling. The findings show that attachment has an effect on externalising problems and support the assumption, that externalising behaviour lead to more externalising behaviour by weakening attachment to school. Furthermore there is evidence, that a low SES and a migration background reinforce the effects of externalising behaviour on school attachment. This could be the consequence of different reactions of teachers and classmates to externalising behaviour depending on social and migration background of the “misbehaving” children. The suspected moderating effects of children’s sex and school performance were not supported by the data.
