From 2000-2002 the ?Schizophrenia has many Faces?-campaign was conducted in Austria as part of the World Psychiatric Association?s (WPA) campaign ?Open the Doors- against Stigma and Discrimination because of Schizophrenia?. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this campaign, a comparative study was performed to assess the possible changes in the general publics attitudes towards topics connected with schizophrenia. In both 1998/1999 and 2007, a representative survey was performed to assess these attitudes. Results suggest that this campaign had not been very effective: The results of this study were somewhat sobering, with one fifth of the population not having any associations with the term "schizophrenia", 80% not wanting to be further informed about the illness, and 64% agreeing with the statement that patients suffering from schizophrenia are dangerous. Compared to the survey in 1998, there was a significant increase within this category. Furthermore, an increase of social distance towards this group of patients has also been noted. On the other hand, there has been an improvement concerning the attitudes towards the possibility of a cure/ treatment for this disease, and, in a subjective way, the campaign has had a positive influence on psychiatry. In conclusion, it is questionable if a campaign which focuses on schizophrenia is a suitable strategy to diminish social stigma towards mental illnesses
