18-GHz Dual-Down-Converter for a Dual-77-GHz Offset-PLL to act in a Heterodyne Radar Transceiver

A 18-GHz voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) combined with an emitter-follower (EF) buffer and two Gilbert mixers is presented. The VCO is stabilized in a phase-locked-loop(PLL) that uses an on-chip divide-by-eight frequency-divider, an external frequency-divider and a commercially available PLL synthesizer. All circuits have been manufactured in a fT > 200 GHz SiGe:C technology and have been implemented fully differential. Both down-converter Gilbert mixers that are LO driven by the VCO offer an input power range from -20dBm to 0 dBm with a power gain larger than 20 dB.
